Youth work goes two ways

3rd October 2019

While it’s important to help young people to learn new skills and overcome challenges, one of our projects create opportunities to challenge them on their foundations, for example teaching the YP respect, basic manners, modelling good behaviour (ie not throwing things or spitting) and not swearing in public.

On the reverse, it is also important to help facilitate better relationships between the wider community and young people. As an example, our Engagement Workers regularly visit local shops, sharing tips on how to approach young people so that youngsters don’t get themselves in a situation where they are feeling challenge in the wrong way which leads to unnecessary confrontation.

It’s also about giving young people the opportunity to feel valued and appreciated, and give the community the opportunity to see positives in them.
