Putting their lives centre stage
8th September 2017
LPW is working in partnership with the Bristol Old Vic and another theatre company to encourage a group of young people from North Bristol to express themselves and tell their own stories through drama.
Since the beginning of the year, they’ve been doing weekly sessions with theatre workers from Headlong, which produced Junkyard, the musical play telling the origin story of the Vench, the adventure playground in Lockleaze.
This programme culminated in a week-long session at the Old Vic, where the group developed, wrote, produced and rehearsed their own series of mini-dramas, before performing them in front of an audience of family and friends..
The 30-minute collection of mini-plays encompassed the major real life challenges young people have to face – including being fostered, bullying at school, power structures, political activism and an unpromising future being bequeathed to them by the older generation.
The young people are anxious to continue the programme and funding is being sought to support the sessions into the future, a unique way to let young people tell their own stories while also boosting their self-confidence.
