The Big Hideout – a new adventure playground for South Bristol

1st February 2018

Following successful negotiations with Bristol City Council, we’ve signed a three year lease to take over around half a hectare of land at Teyfant Road in Hartcliffe. It will become the first new adventure playground in the city for 30 years.

The land is in a pretty rough state at the moment, but clearing work is already underway, after which we’ll start building the wooden structural features and drop in a container that will provide a wet weather facility, as well as secure storage. We’re aiming for an official opening at Easter.

The Big Hideout will be a permanent space where we plan to deliver play sessions for 5 to 12 year olds and support our work with teenagers and older school learners. We’ll also be providing LPW Forest School activities there and Avon Wildlife Trust will be doing educational sessions.

Helping unify the local community around a new local facility, one of the many positive aspects is involving young people in the landscaping and structure building, helping them learn new skills and feel some real ownership of the site. It goes without saying this is a big partnership. LPW’s hugely grateful to Knightstone Housing, AWT, HWCP, HHEAG, Bridge Learning Campus and Arup for their support, direct involvement and commitment.
